Fatboy Slim’s infamous mashup Satisfaction Skank—long traded as an unofficial bootleg—has finally arrived as an official release. Out today on Southern Fried Records, the track pairs The Rolling Stones’ (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction with the Brighton artist’s 1998 hit The Rockafeller Skank.
The release lands 25 years after Norman Cook first spliced the rock classic into his big beat anthem, a combination that became a fixture of bootleg culture and club sets despite lacking formal clearance.
Clearance after years of refusals
The Rolling Stones repeatedly declined sample-clearance requests in the early 2000s, keeping the mashup in legal limbo. That stance has now changed: the band has approved Satisfaction Skank and provided Fatboy Slim with access to the original master tapes, allowing the mix to be rebuilt in higher fidelity.
The shift aligns with the Stones’ recent softening on sampling rights. In 2019, they returned rights to Richard Ashcroft over The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony, which interpolated an orchestral version of The Last Time—another indication of evolving views on how their catalog is reused.
